Against the backdrop of only a few empirical studies on the topic of up-or-out career models in Professional Service Firms, the aim of this paper is to develop a quantitative approach to analyze the perception and effects of up-or-out models in practice. The empirical study was conducted in 2013 in Germany. It is based on an online practitioner survey as well as on a two-by-two between-subjects-experiment with law and business students. On the one hand, our practitioner sample shows that most of the interviewed classic PSFs (law firms and accounting firms) have already introduced alternative career positions to the partner track. However, in most of the interviewed Neo-PSFs (consulting firms) a rather balanced score for up-or-out models and extended career models can be observed. On the other hand, results of our ANOVA analysis reveal that the potential employee groups react differently: Law students show a higher likelihood to apply in connection with the up-or-out model whereas business students show a lower likelihood to apply in this connection. The central contribution of this study is twofold: First, by analyzing potential applicants’ perceptions of the favorability of different career models in PSFs, we develop one of the first employee perspectives on this topic. Second, by taking classic PSFs as well as Neo-PSFs into account, we offer a first approach to a comparative analysis of up-or-out career models in different types of PSFs. |
